Dear Public Sector HR Colleagues,

I am pleased to extend an invitation to you and the human resources
professionals with whom you work to join or renew your membership in the
IPMA-HR Virginia Chapter. Although these are difficult budgetary times
for organizations, families and individuals, professional development is
still a priority, perhaps even more so in challenging times.
The Chapter is enjoying an exciting and successful year, highlighted by
hosting the 2009 Spring Conference at the Stonewall Jackson Hotel and
Conference Center in historic Staunton, Virginia March 12 and 13, 2009.
The Conference theme was Leadership in Challenging Times. The cost to
attend including was very competitive, considering the locale and
Conference agenda. Over 50 IPMA-VA members attended.
Additionally, we hosted two free regional professional development
seminars on the ADAAA and FMLA in Charlottesville on February 12 and in
Fredericksburg on March 5. We had about 75 participants attend the
seminars. We plan to host additional free seminars in 2009, in varied
locations in the Commonwealth.
There is a united membership initiative by the national organization;
IPMA-HR. Virginia Chapter members who are not members of IPMA-HR receive
many benefits of the parent organization, including a weekly HR
e-bulletin and discounted prices on IPMA-HR events. The Virginia Chapter
pays an annual amount per member ($25.00), for this joint membership.
For this reason, the Virginia Chapter Executive Board in 2007 decided to
establish these annual Chapter membership fees:
● Individual Membership in IPMA-VA Chapter: $60
● Organizational Membership, IPMA-VA Chapter (up to 5 members): $200
(each additional person over 5 is an additional $40).
When considering your decision about membership or renewal, please
remember the additional benefits now from IPMA-HR as well as the no-cost
enhancements made by the Virginia chapter, such as credit card
processing for event registrations and for membership renewals or
joining the IPMA-VA. Renew your membership or become a member (either
individually or as an organization) right away, by clicking on the 'Join
or Renew Membership' link at the top of the page.
The Executive Board of the IPMA-VA is committed to meeting the needs of
our membership. Click on the IPMA Information icon and then click on the
IPMA-VA Executive Board icon for a listing of the Board members. Please
let me know if you are interested in serving on an IPMA-committee.
The Chapter Goals and Objectives:
1: To provide a forum for persons engaged in public human resources
administration to discuss current issues.
2: To explain and interpret the objectives and methods of public human
resources administration to the general public, civic groups, public
officials, and public employees.
3: To encourage and facilitate cooperative action among public
jurisdictions and private employers within the Chapter area on matters
of mutual concern.
4: To facilitate the professional development of members by providing
training and networking opportunities.
5: To implement objectives and programs of IPMA-HR within the Chapter
area following the established Code of Ethics.
6: To enhance the professional relationship of the Chapter with other
public sector and professional associations.
I enjoy my SHRM membership and the fact that it increases my awareness
and understanding of HR issues in all sectors. However, public sector
employment has its own set of challenges including laws and common
"rules" that don't apply to others. It is in this way (for me anyway)
that IPMA membership is important. Additionally, the cost of joining the
IPMA-VA is inexpensive, particularly when your office HR colleagues join
too as an organizational membership. Wouldn't you enjoy being part of a
professional association made up of public sector HR professionals from
all over Virginia? Please join or renew your membership in the IPMA-VA
today and ask your colleagues to do likewise.
Sincerely,
Ken Robertson
